Affectionately known as 'The Posh', Peterborough United Football Club recently secured promotion to the Championship League for the 2021/22 season.
The Club officially came into being on 17th May 1934 when a crowded meeting at the city's now long demolished Angel Hotel formed a professional club to fill a void left by the collapse of Peterborough and Fletton United some two years earlier. In 1960 the team secured a place in the Football League.

Where did 'The Posh' name come from?
The 'Posh' name first came to the fore in the 1920s from Pat Tirrel, player manager of Fletton United, and a previous user of the present club's London Road ground. He announced at the close season of 1921 that he was looking for 'Posh players for a Posh team' to compete in the Northamptonshire League (later the United Counties League).
When the current football team was formed, their Midland League debut against Gainsborough Trinity on 1st September 1934 was greeted with cries of 'Up The Posh' from the crowd.
