Extinction talk at Peterborough Museum

About

Thu 6th October 2022 / 6:30-7:30pm / £6

The area around Peterborough is littered with brick pits. Historically these have been the source for many amazing fossils of marine reptiles such as ichthyosaurs, plesiosaurs and marine crocodiles, as well as a handful of dinosaurs.

Although modern extraction processes make it harder to find these fossils, they are still being discovered. Over the past few years several important specimens have been found, including all types of marine reptiles.

Some have been made by members of the Peterborough Geological and Palaeontological Group, both as a group and as individuals working with Peterborough Museum and Art Gallery. This talk is about some of these specimens, how we excavated them and the scientific opportunity such finds offer.

Most historic specimens, although magnificent, lack the detailed information we now want. By careful and systematic excavation we can can recreate the ancient environments they occupied, the changes over time to the seas they inhabited in response to changing climates, their behaviour and what happened to their bodies as they became fossils.
