Join Dr. Sue Brunning for her lecture Respect your Elders: Old Swords in Anglo-Saxon England as part of the Flag Fen Archaeology Lectures.
In Anglo-Saxon England, old swords were highly prized treasures coveted by warriors, warlords and kings. They were placed in burials, depicted in art and lauded in literature. This talk explores the evidence for the phenomenon and seeks to understand why older was better when it came to one’s sword.
In 2020, Vivacity are delighted to be welcoming curators from the Department of Britain, Europe and Prehistory at The British Museum to deliver the Flag Fen Archaeology Lectures. Dr. Brunning is Curator of European Early Medieval & Sutton Hoo Collections . She specialises in early Anglo-Saxon material culture with a particular research interest in metalwork, beliefs and ritual, warrior culture, attitudes and world-views, and the life-histories of artefacts. Dr. Brunning has a special interest in the Sutton Hoo ship burial, its context and its associated archive.
